Merit Award: Tolu Coker London Fashion Week AW19

Join us backstage and front-row at London Fashion Week for Merit Award Winner, Tolu Coker AW19, where International Artistic Director and Head of Team Efi Davies draws inspiration from the 80s and 90s to create individual texture that compliments each models individual look.

The show

What’s the inspiration behind the collection?

Inspired by inclusivity and diversity, Tolu Coker’s collection serves as creative outlet for youthful expression and political reform. AW 19 sees a combination of: reworked denims, recycled leathers, reused plastic and lace scraps, juxtaposed alongside striking, daring silhouettes.

What’s the inspiration behind the hair?

Efi and the session team revisited the designer’s childhood and upbringing which took the late 80’s/early 90’s into consideration. Working with afro hair, this was all about enhancing differing textured and shapes and each model had a completely unique look. This included: cornrows and extensions, with added fun elements such as pom poms and a touch of elegance with varying types of headdresses.

Step 1

Brushing the natural hair through, start with a radial parting, then prime with small amounts of label.m Soft Wax to help keep the braid creation neat.
Step 2

Add extension pieces into the hair close to the scalp and work in a tight three-strand braid throughout the length and ensure to blend into the natural hair so seamless in appearance. Secure with black elastic at the ends.
