Allergy Testing

Get salon-ready for colour

If you’re having your colour done, there’s something important you need to do first. Before your next salon colour appointment at TONI&GUY, you need to take an up-to-date Allergy Alert Test. If you’re new to us, or are an existing client without an up-to-date test, or if you feel you’ve become sensitised to anything - either through illness or from taking medication - you must take an allergy test.

You can take an allergy test with us in the salon at least 48 hours before your colour appointment, or at home at least five days before your appointment.

At home

The At Home Colourstart 5 Day Allergy Alert Test is a ready-to-use Allergy Alert Patch Test you can buy online at store.toniandguy.com or at your local TONI&GUY salon. It can show if you may be allergic to PPD, one of the most common ingredients in hair colourants.

The Test Patch must stay on your arm for 48 hours and be done at least five days before your colour appointment. The result must be recorded on your Colourstart Passport online or app on Day 5 and shared with us at TONI&GUY.

Colourstart Passport allows you to update your allergy test record ahead of future colour treatments by carefully completing a set of health-related questions.

You will not be required to repeat the use of the Colourstart Patch Test if your health status remains unchanged. Don’t wait for your next appointment to set up your first Colourstart Passport. Why not get started now? Please allow a minimum of two working days for delivery, and review the consultation questions before you buy.

Consultation questions

Before you take an At Home Colourstart 5 Day Allergy Alert Test, you’ll be asked a series of questions to help decide if Colourstart is right for you. You’ll be asked:

  • If you suspect or know you are allergic to PPD or hair colourant
  • If you have a black henna tattoo or have you had an allergy to a black henna tattoo in the past
  • If you have redness, swelling or itchy skin
  • If you are taking oral or topical steroids or other immunosuppressant medicines
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Consultation questions

Before you carry out an In Salon 48 Hour Allergy Alert Test, you will be asked a series of questions to help decide whether it’s safe to apply colour and whether an Allergy Alert Test is required. We will ask you:

  • If you are under the age of 16
  • If it has been more than six months since you last had a colour appointment with us
  • If it has been more than 12 months since you had an In Salon 48 Hour Allergy Alert Test
  • If you suspect or know you are allergic to PPD or hair colourant
  • If you have ever had an allergic reaction to any type of skin tattoo including henna or permanent make up
  • If you have had any type of skin tattoo including henna or permanent make-up since your last hair colour or Allergy Alert Test
  • If you have a rash on your face, or a sensitive, irritated and damaged scalp
  • If you have had any allergic reaction since your last Allergy Alert Test that has resulted in you taking medication
  • If you have taken any hay fever or other allergy medication in the last 24 hours.

We will be unable to colour your hair if...

  • You are under 16 years old
  • You are 16 to 17 years old and your parent or guardian is not present to sign the consent form during the consultation
  • You suspect or know you are allergic to PPD or hair colourant
  • You have undergone cancer treatment in the last six months. Cancer Research UK recommend that it’s best not to use hair colour during this time.
